Organizing Your Kitchen: Where are you going to put everything?

We recently worked with 2 clients to design their kitchens. One client had a tiny kitchen with awkward storage and we were able to expand their kitchen and double their cabinet space. The other client had to stay within their current floorplan and they just needed to update their original 1930’s kitchen cabinets to maximize usable space. This client took time to consider where every kitchen item would be placed and we met several times to make sure every item had a place in her new cabinets. The first client was so overwhelmed by having so much more storage that it took an enormous amount of time to put her kitchen items in new cabinets.

It’s a great idea to take time and envision yourself in your kitchen and where your most used items need to be. Then meet with your kitchen designer multiple times, if needed, and make any necessary changes so that your kitchen will be as functional as it is beautiful. Someone recently told me, “When you design your kitchen, imagine yourself standing in it making a PB&J sandwich. Where is your bread, your peanut butter, your plates, and your knives? If someone walks in the kitchen will you bump butts?”

Take a look at this small layout and think about things to consider…

Are you left handed? Maybe having the dishwasher on the left side would work better for you. Will you be storing your plates or glasses or both above the dishwasher? Is the corner between the range and the sink utilized with a lazy susan? Does that lazy susan have a pole running up through the center? If so, I recommend splurging and getting one that does not have that so most items of any size can fit. How much storage and what type of storage is in the breakfast bar? Drawers function so much better than standard cabinets as they save you from having to get on your knees and going on a caving expedition trying to find that one lid that fits that one bowl.

There are so many additions you can add to make your kitchen more storage efficient and functional.

Organizing Your Kitchen: Practical Solutions for Efficiency

A well-organized kitchen enhances efficiency and reduces stress during meal preparation. Whether you have a small apartment kitchen or a spacious culinary haven, here are some practical options for keeping everything in its place:

1. Pantry Organization

  • Clear Containers: Store dry goods like pasta, rice, and grains in transparent containers to see exactly what you have at a glance. Label them for easy identification.
  • Door Racks: Utilize the inside of pantry doors for spices, sauces, or wraps with mounted racks or organizers.
  • Baskets and Bins: Group similar items together in baskets or bins (e.g., snacks, baking supplies) to maintain order and simplify inventory checks.

3. Countertop Management

  • Appliance Garages: Keep frequently used appliances like toasters or blenders tucked away in appliance garages to free up counter space.
  • Vertical Storage: Use vertical space with hooks or magnetic strips for knives and utensils, or install shelves for cookbooks or spice racks.

4. Under-Sink Solutions

  • Stackable Bins: Utilize stackable bins or trays to organize cleaning supplies, garbage bags, and recycling bins, making them easy to access and maintain.
  • Adjustable Shelving: Install adjustable shelves to accommodate varying heights of cleaning products and maximize the use of space under the sink.

5. Cabinet and Shelf Additions

  • Plate Racks: Store plates vertically with plate racks to save shelf space and prevent chips or breakage.
  • Tiered Shelf Inserts: Double your shelf space with tiered shelf inserts for canned goods or dishes.

6. Specialty Storage

  • Wine Racks: Install a wine rack to keep bottles organized and accessible, whether built into cabinetry or freestanding.
  • Pot Racks: Hang pots and pans overhead or on walls to free up cabinet space and add a decorative touch to your kitchen.

7. Labels and Inventory

  • Labeling Systems: Use labels or chalkboard paint to identify containers and shelves, ensuring everything has a designated place.
  • Inventory Lists: Maintain a pantry inventory list or use apps to track items and expiration dates, helping you shop smarter and reduce waste.

By implementing these kitchen organization options, you can transform your cooking space into a streamlined, efficient area where everything has its place. Whether you prefer minimalist designs or enjoy a more eclectic style, organizing your kitchen will not only save you time but also make cooking and entertaining a more enjoyable experience. Take the time to assess your needs and customize these solutions to fit your kitchen layout and lifestyle. Happy organizing!
